Our chosen charity for August is Rainbow Migration, they're a UK based charity who supports LGBTQIA+ people who are navigating the asylum and immigration system.
Rainbow Migration is Europe’s longest-running charity supporting LGBTQIA+ people seeking asylum in the UK. For so many LGBTQIA+ people seeking asylum, the sense of safety and belonging has been taken away, and the journey to rebuild it is filled with enormous challenges. Rainbow Migration provides legal advice, practical and emotional support, and campaigns for a fairer asylum system for people forced to flee persecution simply because of who they are or who they love.
What they do:
They help LGBTQI+ people seeking asylum with free legal advice, emotional support, and access to housing and healthcare; plus they support LGBTQI+ couples applying to live together in the UK.
One of their current campaigns is working to end detention of LGBTQIA+ people in the UK. There are currently unknown numbers of LGBTQIA+ people being held in detention right now, they are detained without courts or judges in harsh conditions for an unlimited amount of time. Nobody should be detained indefinitely with no idea on when they might be released and no LGBTIA+ person should be locked up and subject to LGBTIA-phobic bullying and abuse. What they're able to achieve with donations:
- £15 means an emotional support call for someone in immigration detention
- £25 can provide a translator, so language is never a barrier to getting help
- £50 can help relocate a trans person seeking asylum into safe housing
