Olivia and Oliver are bringing their love of colour to this year’s MKAL: Color Kaleidoscope, and when it comes to choosing shades, Tam isn’t about playing favourites.
Bold, bright, earthy, soft… she loves them all! That freedom to play across the whole colour spectrum is a big part of what makes her yarns so special. There’s a beautiful painterly quality to her colours, with shades that blend and mingle like watercolours, while still packing plenty of punch.
We caught up with Tam to talk colour, inspiration and the art of putting a palette together. So, let’s take a peek inside her colour kaleidoscope...
“When I am picking a colour palette for crafting, I usually start with one colour that I know I love.”
From there, Tam starts playing with complementary shades, mixing and matching until the combination feels right.
“I then pick out some complementary colours and usually mix and match a few times (okay, a lot of times… 🙈) before I decide what I like. And even still, as I work on my project and see the colours mix together, I might decide to swap one out and change it for another… 😅”
We asked Tam if she could decorate the outside of her own kaleidoscope, what images would you include?
“The outside of my kaleidoscope would probably look a lot like the inside of my kaleidoscope! I love geometric shapes, line work, symmetry and texture. I think the balance is so beautiful!”
We imagine Tam’s kaleidoscope filled with painterly reflections of water, warm mossy shades and geometric shapes shifting through the glass, soft colours meeting bold ones, all changing as you turn it.
