Counting down to Westknits' 2025 Surprise Sock Along... kit launch day is nearly here! Ross from Twisted Ambitions shared some insight on his process of creating a hand-dyed sock yarn and how he embraces the art of mismatched socks!

What inspires the names and colour stories of your palettes?

It always starts with music. When I’m creating a new colorway, I put on whatever I’m vibing with in the studio, close my eyes, and let the music take over. Every note has a color, and I wait for that first color to pop into my mind — that’s where I start. The rest of the palette builds around that feeling. The names usually come straight from the lyrics or the mood the song gives me. It’s all super instinctual and emotional — like a color soundtrack.

What makes dyeing for sock yarn unique compared to dyeing for other types of garments or projects?

Sock yarn needs balance. I want it to have personality and fun pops of color, but still knit up in a way that lets texture or patterns shine. It’s got to be exciting and practical — that’s the sweet spot.

How did you first get into hand-dyeing yarn and what creative direction are you hoping to explore next?

I couldn’t find the colors I wanted to knit with, so I started dyeing them myself. One experiment turned into a full-on obsession, and now it’s my full-time joy. Lately I’m into playing with contrast, layering colors in unexpected ways, and telling a story through each skein.

Do you have any other bits of information or inspiration to share when it comes to sock knitting?

Don’t overthink it — socks are the perfect playground. Mix colors, try new techniques, or just knit one and call it art! There are no rules. (Except maybe weaving in your ends eventually.)
