SSAL Dyer Profile: Twisted Ambitions

June 09, 2024 2 min read

We had so much fun catching up with Ross from Twisted Ambitions and hearing all about his inspiration and what he's looking forward to from this year's Sock Along!

What inspires your colour creation?

When I'm creating new colours, the music I'm listening to while getting the yarn ready to dye is my main source of inspiration. Some days I listen to calm, relaxing acoustic music, while other days it can be alternative rock or blues. After I've prepared the yarn and set everything up, I like to close my eyes and let the music guide me as I work. I've always had a vivid imagination when it comes to colour, seeing music as different hues and shades. Some notes feel like they're blue, while others might be orange, and so on. From just one song, I can imagine a whole range of colours. Once I've got my colours in mind, I start mixing dyes to get the exact shades I want, based on the feelings and images the music evokes. As I continue listening to the music, I start applying the colours to the yarn, letting the rhythm and melodies influence my choices.

Are you a sock knitter? If so, what do you love about sock knitting?

I’m not much of a sock knitter anymore, although that could change since Stephen keeps releasing his amazing sock patterns. I used to knit socks like crazy years ago but now I tend to gravitate more towards sweaters and hats. I do have a bunch of Westknits sock patterns lined up in my queue that are ready to go so I may need to jump on the sock knitting wagon sooner than later!

What stitches or techniques are you hoping to see from this year’s SSAL?

I would like to see more intarsia knitting because I just love the look of it and it’s such a simple technique that I feel is coming back in style. Any chance I get to use multiple colours in a project I’m totally there for it!

If you could knit a pair of socks for anyone, who would it be?

My husband for sure! Although I’m a selfish knitter I’d still like to tackle a project for him, he’s been asking for a while now. For me it’s easier to knit something and end up gifting it rather than feeling like I have a deadline to make something for someone.
