About Birdstreet BFL

Birdstreet BFL from Birdstreet Yarn is a beautifully soft yet robust fingering-weight yarn base crafted from a superwash blend of Bluefaced Leicester and nylon exclusive to Stephen & Penelope. Known for its balance of softness and strength, this yarn creates fabrics that feel wonderful against the skin while standing up to everyday wear — making it particularly well suited to socks, accessories, and wardrobe-worthy garments.

Birdstreet BFL delivers excellent stitch definition and drape, bringing even the most intricate patterns to life. Whether you’re knitting cosy socks, lightweight shawls, or detailed sweaters, it’s a base that pairs performance with a luxurious hand.

About Birdstreet Yarn

Birdstreet Yarn is a creative, family‑run indie yarn brand based in Bristol, England, founded by Clare and Jon out of a shared love of colour, craft, and community. What began with Clare making project bags and experimenting with dyeing has grown into a devoted small‑batch hand‑dyed yarn studio where inspiration comes from everyday life — from woodland walks and rusty gates to photography, books, and striking palettes.

The brand creates beautifully coloured tonal, variegated, and speckled yarns that reflect Clare and Jon’s artistic sensibilities and meticulous attention to detail. Dyeing is guided by thoughtful recipes and creative exploration, resulting in fibres that stand out for their expressive colours and unique character.

Birdstreet Yarn is also deeply rooted in community — hosting local gatherings like Flock in Bristol and collaborating with talented designers and makers. Whether at festivals or through special yarn events, the brand celebrates connection, creativity, and the joy of making within the wider yarn‑loving community.

Why you'll love Hand Dyed Yarn

Hand dyed yarn is extra special because every skein is one of a kind. There are no batches and no perfectly matched skeins. This is where you can see the artistic point of view of each dye house we work with. Some dyers are quite exact in their repeatable colours while others are quite artistic and splashy, valuing the creation of each skein rather than the closeness of the colourway.

We take great care to photograph our products accurately, and still the unique skeins in your order may look different to the photograph, and they may even look different to each other. If you are using hand dyed yarns and are concerned with dramatic colour changes, when changing from one skein to the next, alternate rows to blend in the new skein.

Care Instructions

Items made from this superwash wool/nylon blend should be washed by hand in cold or lukewarm water with a gentle rinse-free detergent. Wash gently but never wring or twist when washing.
Gently squeeze as much water as possible, roll in a towel and press moisture out. Then lay finished piece flat to dry, blocking to shape.

We recommend washing even superwash wool by hand, as it will extend the life of your precious hand made items!

Benefits of this Yarn

Superwash Wool Nylon blends combine the benefits of 100% natural and sustainable wool with the sturdiness of Nylon. This makes the yarn a good choice for snuggly socks, accessories and garments. This blend results in a durable yet soft finished item.

Breathable
Great for socks and garments as well as accessories like shawls

I'm pairing this with WestWool's Glowhaiir in aubergine

I'm pairing this with WestWool's Glowhaiir in aubergine, knitting on 5.5mm for a looser texture in a simple wrap where the yarn is a feature, not the stitch. I'm loving the feel and weight. Of course, it helps to be in a beautiful holiday location to knit ;)
Thank you, Birdstreet and West Wool.
