YAL 2022 DYER PROFILE: THE WANDERING FLOCK

February 26, 2022 2 min read

Our third YAL dyer is the delightful The Wandering Flock, this contemporary hand dyed yarn studio was created in 2019 by Geraldine Yang and she is collaborating with WALK Collection. She was looking to create wearable and contemporary colours that took inspiration from runways and streetwear.

This beautiful yarn has been featured by Pom Pom Quarterly in their 40th Issue and Geraldine loves working with other creative makers and the process of creating something special together.

Before dyeing yarn Geraldine was the creative director of a womanswear company but crafting has been something she's been passionate about from a young age. She learnt to crochet at eight years old and learnt to knit from her Grandmother at 12, in 2007 she wanted to meet more makers in her local area and started a Meetup called Knitting Around New York which now boosts 3000 members and seven events across New York City.

The Wandering Flock is a female and minority owned business and one of their large goals is to support other BIPOC makers in the community. The company ethos is strongly aligned with Geraldine's own beliefs which means that all the yarn is custom milled and ethically sourced. They make sure to dye colours in a sequence that means they can reuse as much water as possible as well as using a little plastic as possible in the shipping of their yarns.

The team at The Wandering Flock is still quite small from Geraldine who founded this dye studio, Marie, the Studio and Production Manager, Katelyn, the Studio Assistant, and Marvin, Geraldine's husband who offers his time to support them. Geraldine ensures that the team gets paid a fair rate and are provided with healthcare, which is not a given in the USA and can be extremely expensive.

At the moment Geraldine is working on finding the balance between being a new mum and a small business owner. She makes sure that the team support each other both inside and outside of the studio, they love seeing the beautiful items that are created with their yarn.

If you want to follow along with what they're up to you can find them on Instagram, website and sign up to their newsletter!
