The Hiberknitalong is a cozy, deep-winter KAL to keep us all energized through the darker months.  Set the tea kettle on and get ready for the HIBERKNITALONG!

Below are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions we have seen in our other KALs. If you have read all of these and you still don't have an answer to your question, contact hello@westknits.com.

If you have questions about your HKAL kit, they should be directed to info@stephenandpenelope.com

ABOUT THE HKAL

Knit Alongs (KALs) are a fun, social activity in which a group of knitters all make the same project in a specified timeframe. Our hosted knit alongs are complete with kits filled with the right yarn for the project, often in exclusive colours, and include exclusive or limited edition gifts to make the experience that much more exciting.

The Hiberknitalong will feature not one, but two shawl designs in different shapes, so you can choose the shape that fits you best.  This year's HKAL kits include a print book, which contains both of the shawl patterns for the knit along.

December 26, 2021.  The perfect time for some hot cocoa and lazy fireplace gazing.

You can purchase the patterns by buying a copy of Hiberknitting 2 here or as an ebook from Ravelry or Gumroad or as an individual pattern. The names of the two shawl options this year are Cabled Trellis Shawl and Spiraling Cables Triangle. You can choose either of the shawls to knit for knit along. They are both included in the Hiberknitting 2 print book and e-book. Each pattern is also available individually if you want to participate by just purchasing one shawl pattern. Both patterns are included in each Stephen & Penelope kit on November 1.  There will be lots of fun chat in the Ravelry group and on Instagram.

The patterns are in available Hiberknitting 2 which you can purchase as an ebook or physical book.

The pattern will be suitable for adventurous beginners (you should already know how to knit, purl, increase, decrease, and read a pattern), and it will be enjoyable for seasoned knitters too. There is so much support throughout the KAL so you will find a lot of help and tips on completing each section in this Ravelry group. There will be photo tutorials and videos where they are necessary to assist you with visualising the techniques and construction.

There is no brioche in this year's Hiberknitalong.

For this year's pattern, you'll need DK or worsted weight yarn like this:

MC - 500yds / 457m

CC1 - 150yds / 137m

CC2 - 150yds / 137m

CC3 - 135yds / 123m

You can also knit either shawl with just one contrast colorway like this:

MC - 500yds / 457m
CC - 435yds / 398

The MC in the shawl samples is solid shown in West Wool Tandem and the CC's in the samples are self-striping marled yarns like Spincycle Yarn Dream State or Schoppel Wolle Stärke 6. If you want to use any other hand dyed or solid DK weight yarn for your CC, then that will work beautifully as well.

This shawl is designed for DK weight yarn, but worsted weight yarn is fine too.

The Hiberknitalong shawls were designed with one solid colour (MC) and self-striping marled yarn for the CC. You are welcome to use other types of colours and yarn styles for your shawl. Customise the colours and make it your own!

Yes of course! The Hiberknitalong is open to everyone, it's not necessary to buy a kit to participate. We're offering a limited amount of kits this year. If you want to knit from stash or partially from stash, then lookout for the Hiberknitalong introductory video on Stephen's YouTube channel to get some colour inspiration.
