Kit Contents:

To knit the Stripestep Socks, you can pick a kit featuring one solid colour skein of sock yarn paired with a ball of self-striping sock yarn. The front of the leg and top of the foot are knitted flat in garter stitch stripes. The back of the leg is knitted flat in stockinette stitch, seamlessly joined to the edges of the front leg. A garter stitch heel flap flows into the bottom foot stripes, which are also knitted flat while being attached to the top foot fabric. The differently sized stripes create a playful, staggered effect that is simple to knit and striking to wear. Choose your favourite combination and have fun knitting these eye-catching socks!

Yarn that is hand dyed and/or dyed in batches may have some variation in colour between skeins taken from different lots. We take great care in photographing our kits and yarns accurately, however colours may vary slightly from the pictures.

About the pattern

This pattern is the January sock in my Westknits Year of Socks e-book. This pattern is available exclusively as part of the Westknits Year of Socks 2025 e-book. You will receive a new sock pattern update at the beginning of each month until all 12 socks are released by December 2025. The sock patterns will be available to purchase individually in 2026.

These top-down socks feature a fun modular construction. Begin with 2x2 ribbing for the Cuff, then knit a garter stitch rectangle flat for the front leg and top foot. The back leg is then knitted in stockinette stitch with thin stripes, resulting in a staggered geometric striping pattern on the leg. The heel flap is knitted in garter stitch, followed by the gusset and sole. The striped sections are knitted together for a seamless modular construction. Combine one solid skein of sock yarn with a self-striping main colour like Schoppel Wolle Zauberball Crazy to create these stripe-tastic colour-changing socks!

Finished Measurements

6 (7.5, 9, 10.5, 12)″ / 15 (19, 23, 27, 30)cm leg and foot circumference. Measurements taken after blocking.

Size 3 shown on a size US 13 / EU 47 size foot that has a 10.5″ / 27cm foot circumference. The sock fits with 1.5″ / 4cm of negative ease.

Socks are designed to fit an actual foot circumference of 7 (8.5, 10, 11.5, 13)″ / 18 (22, 25, 29, 33)cm. The socks are designed to fit with negative ease. Choose a size with a finished foot circumference measurement that is approximately 1″ / 2.5cm smaller than your actual foot circumference, so that the sock will fit nice and snug on your foot.

The lengths of the cuff, leg, and foot are easily customizable by knitting more pattern repeats for a longer leg or foot or fewer pattern repeats for a shorter leg or foot.
