About Lettlopi

A true Icelandic classic, Lettlopi from Ístex is a sturdy, characterful yarn that has been the star of traditional Lopapeysas for generations. Its woollen spin creates a fabric that is remarkably warm yet wonderfully light and airy — a combination that feels almost impossible until you wear it. We love the breadth of Istex's colour palette, which spans natural, undyed tones and vivid contemporary shades, capturing both the rugged heritage and modern spirit of Icelandic life.

About Istex

Ístex is Iceland’s premier wool company, dedicated to continuing a tradition of wool processing that began in Mosfellsbær in 1896. Today, the company buys and processes about 99 % of all Icelandic wool, working closely with local farmers — who still own the majority of the business — to bring natural, sustainable, and eco‑friendly products to makers and wool lovers around the world.

At the heart of Ístex’s offering is its iconic Lopi yarn range, including beloved classics like Álafosslopi, Léttlopi, Jöklalopi, Fjallalopi, Plötulopi, Einband and more, all crafted from 100 % Icelandic wool with beautiful natural and dyed colour options. These yarns are prized for their unique combination of lightweight warmth, water‑resistance, and breathability, qualities that reflect the extraordinary properties of Icelandic sheep fleece.

Beyond yarn, Ístex supports knitters with traditional and creative pattern books, and also produces Icelandic wool blankets and duvets that bring the comfort of Icelandic wool into homes worldwide. With a deep heritage, strong connection to place, and commitment to natural fibre excellence, Ístex continues to celebrate authentic Icelandic craft and versatile, durable wool products for every generation of makers.

Why you'll love Commercially Dyed Yarn

Commercially dyed yarn is dyed in large vats, usually made into large hanks of 1 kilo or more. The yarn is dyed to an extremely precise, all over colour using gradually rising heat. You can generally expect commercially dyed yarn to be very even and dye baths to be exact.

Commercially dyed yarn is wonderful for projects where you want a consistent, all over colour, or even colourwork pieces like fair isle or stranded knitting.

Care Instructions

Items made from 100% Wool should be washed by hand in cold or lukewarm water with a gentle rinse-free detergent. Use very little agitation when washing so as not to felt or full the fabric. Never wring or twist handmade woollen items when washing.
Gently squeeze as much water as possible, roll in a towel and press moisture out. Then lay your finished piece flat to dry.

Wool does not need to be washed after every wear as it is a natural, breathable product. When you can see (or, rarely, smell) that a woollen item is in need of washing, follow the above instructions
