Our Designer of the Month for April is the incredible Sylvia Watts-Cherry. Sylvia is a UK based designer who loves bold colours and striking patterns.

Sylvia has been knitting since a young age and her identity inspires a lot of her designs, she draws influence from her Nigerian/African heritage and her upbringing in Scotland. Throughout her work she aims to remember the contributions of people from African heritage to the creative world while enriching the current knitting community.

In 2018 Sylvia appeared on Kirstie's Handmade Christmas Jumper on Channel 4 in the UK, after this Sylvia ventured into professional knitwear designing. Since starting on her designing journey she has had patterns published in Laine Magazine, Pom Pom Quarterly, By Hand Serial, Taproot, Knit Now and other magazines and publications. Sylvia's patterns have also appeared in Warm Hands which was a collaboration between Jeanette Sloane and Katie Davies as well as Worsted which is a book curated by Aimée Gille and published by Laine magazine.

When Sylvia isn't designing she can be found teaching intarsia colourwork workshops along with other knitting techniques.

We love Sylvia's incredibly colourful designs and one of her most recognisable is the Nubian Queen jumper which went viral on social media in early 2019. We have this sample as well as Tortoiseshell Jumper, Fata Morgana and Caledonia in store now so if you're in the neighbourhood be sure to pop by.

You can also find Sylvia on her website, ravelry, instagram, etsy and lovecrafts!
